Mountain Bike Papallacta

CanoaThis is an excellent way to see a cross section of Ecuador's eco-systems in one day.

As we head east from Quito crossing the valley of los Chillos towards the Cordillera Oriental and the Amazon jungle, if it's clear you'll get striking views of all the snow capped mountains of the Eastern Cordillera: Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Antisana, and Chimborazo.  After an hour and a half we arrive at a 4,200 m (13,780 ft) pass called la Virgen.  From here we'll jump on our bikes and pedal across the páramo, the Ecuadorian equivalent of the Artic Tundra.  We'll descend through the mist and cloud forest until we reach Cuyuja, the gateway to the Amazon Rainforest.  We'll eat some lunch then drive you back up to 3,300 m (10,830 ft), where we'll visit arguably Ecuador's best hot springs at Papallacta.  Here you'll have time to soak before our last leg of our trip.

After our relaxing dip, we'll drive back up to the Virgen Pass and hop back on our bike and speed westward down 2,000 m (6,560 ft) to the Tumbaco Valley.  From here we take the short drive back to Quito by jeep.
