Otavalo
We'll pick you up at your hotel at 7:00 am and head north just across to the charming and industrious town of Otavalo, home of one of Latin America's most famous indigenous markets. The market opens early, and nearly everything is sold, livestock, food, handcrafts and textiles of cotton and wool (sheep, llama and alpaca).Although the traditional market occurs every Saturday, there are ample shopping opportunities during the weekdays, when the towns shops steal the show. Otavaleños (the people of Otavalo) have long been famous for their impressive selection of hand-woven textiles, woolen clothing and handcrafts. Here it is expected that you bargain; and bargains you will find if this skill comes naturally. At around 1:00 pm we'll have lunch in town, then drive up to Laguna Cuicocha, a beautiful lake that lies in a caldera at the foot of Mount Cotocachi (4,939 m : 16,203 ft). In the afternoon, we'll head back to Quito.
